In 2022, my partner and I built our first home with Stephen Alexander Homes in Virginia Beach, and the experience exceeded our expectations. While there were some supply chain setbacks due to COVID, the overall process was smooth, well-managed, and transparent. We built through the Spot Build (“Build Where You Want to Live”) program, and the team was truly fantastic. We have loved our home from day one. Couldn’t recommend them enough! We built the Ashland plan!
I built a beautiful custom home with SAH in 2012-2013 in Lago Mar with extensive updates, changes, and trim. At the time, I was told it had the most trim upgrades they'd ever done.There were a lot of issues with build and we had to have many meetings as my husband and I would stop by and see errors (like missing transoms, trim not matching what we were told came "standard" and tiles missing in a bathroom we'd paid to upgrade).I've since built another home from scratch and understand that it's always stressful to build a home, there are a ton of moving parts, subcontractors, and details. Mistakes are going to happen and you're going to have to follow-up. They are building tons of homes and yours is personal to you, but not entirely to the builder.We had issues after close with a number of items and mostly it was electrical, roof/leak-related and HVAC. I had to argue with their warranty person a number of times to get punch-out items done in the first 6 months but, once she was replaced as they had outgrown her, it was better.They did come and try to address the roof leaks several times after I raised issue and, 5 years later, even came to pay for an install a dehumidifier under the home in the crawl when the house was sweating and the custom-upgraded hardwoods were beginning to buckle. They sent their hardwood pro to come repair it.Later, I contacted them to find out who was the vendor for some of the work as I needed normal wear and tear repairs and was provided an answer in less than a day.My experiences with a new local builder have been awful. They do much less custom work, for similar prices, and the quality of finishes such as paint and other are very sub par. Their trim work is 80% less refined, and they won't even fix or discuss issues 1-2 years out that are obviously their fault. We're probably going to have to sue.I believe SAH honestly tries to address reasonable issues (you may have to be persistent but they will) and backed up their work with me as far as 5 years later after build.SAH is building in my opinion the most beautiful homes in the area and are always working to find new and unique finishes and touches to change up their style while staying true to their brand.While my experience with them wasn't without issue, I hope to work with them on my final, dream home again in the future. I know it'll be beautiful!
SAH were fantastic to work with on our custom new build. Offered great design plans but also willing to adapt to our needs - such as a first floor master. Fair-minded and straightforward when dealing with any setback. Well-managed building process and a genuine pride in workmanship and the final product. We shopped for nearly 2 years to find the perfect house for our blended family in either Chesapeake or VA Beach. After exhausting our search, we decided to look into the possibility of building our home. As a Realtor myself for over 10 years, I saw new construction homes all the time and knew of builders in our area. The more I saw homes built by Stephen Alexander Homes, I knew that was the route I wanted to take. I introduced my husband to SAH and he said he didn't want any other builder. We found the beautiful neighborhood of Ashby's Bridge off of Sandbridge Rd in VA Beach, chose a lot and sat down with Stephen Quick and the architect, Tom, numerous times to get the exact home we wanted. They worked with us from start to finish with professional suggestions and advice, but most importantly listened to what we wanted in a home. We chose one of SAH's "older" models because we wanted a more traditional floor plan for our large family with every child having their own bedroom and space. The adjustments made to the floor plan and the addition of a downstairs master bedroom turned out incredible and is exactly what we expressed to SAH's and more. Our home even qualified for a VA Beach property tax reduction because of its energy efficiency rating. We have had so many complements on both the exterior and interior layout of our home because it is so different. To us we have the best SAH model out there :) We knew it would take time because we were building at the start of a new neighborhood, but it was so worth the wait. We love our home and we truly appreciate the professionalism of the SAH office and staff. We highly recommend the quality, craftsmanship, and support of Stephen Alexander Homes and their product. When you see a Stephen Alexander Home you know it because of the aesthetics and uniqueness. Not many builders can say that.
We absolutely love our Stephen Alexander home! We built the home from across the country and the process was smooth and straight forward! We were given pictures and virtual walk throughs every step of the way! We have had the house for 5 years and the customer services has been exceptional! They have gone above and beyond and even fixed a few minor issues well outside the warranty period! John has been a fantastic construction manager helping with post build questions! It has been a great experience and I would not hesitate to work with Stephen Alexander Homes again!
