If I could leave a 0 star review I would. My family built our recent home with sunset, and to say this was a painful experience would be an understatement. My parents have dealt with non-stop issues since possession (which mind you was 8 months past our original possession date and HUNDREDS of thousands of dollars over). Not to mention they have removed my mother’s 1 star review 4 times now. A team of fire ants would be more suitable to build your new home. Find a new builder.
I wasn't personally a client of this builder, but I had close exposure to their process through someone who was. What I observed was a consistent lack of professionalism from the owner Pedro and his team. Ignoring calls and texts for weeks at a time. When the homeowner was able to catch him on the phone he was conveniently walking into a drs appt and again would blow them off with no response. Quotes grossly underestimated and misleading throughout the build. It was shocking to watch how issues were handled from blame being shifted to trades and the homeowners themselves. It raised serious concerns about how customers are treated. Based on what I saw secondhand, this is not a company I would trust with such a maior investment.
Posting my review for a second time since Sunset managed to have my first review removed which seems to be a trend as other poor reviews have also been removed. Due to the character limitations of a Google review we are only able to touch on our experience, but if you have any additional questions, please feel free to reach out via social media.During our initial selection of a builder we found reviews helpful, which is in part why we feel it necessary to share our experience for others who may be considering Sunset. Upon reflection of their reviews it has become more obvious that the majority are not from families who have built homes with Sunset, but from employees, family and friends. This feels at best, disingenuous.Nothing about our build with Sunset went smoothly; budgets were ignored and possession timelines meant nothing to them. We were given change orders almost weekly, original estimates were never even close to the actual cost and we were left constantly wondering how an award winning builder was consistently unable to accurately estimate any aspect of our build. When we would seek clarification on the constant additional costs we were told they did not realize the scope of the work required or the entirety of the work was not captured in the original estimate. Despite stressing the importance of a Fall 2024 possession and being told that was a reasonable timeline, we did not take possession of our home until the end of May 2025. We asked on multiple occasions towards the end of the build when we would be getting a firm possession to allow us to book movers, coordinate possession of our old home, etc- this was never provided. We were left guessing up until days prior to getting the keys to our home.Communication was difficult and attempts to speak to Pedro (owner) to address significant concerns were often ignored. Emails, calls, texts went unanswered and if we did receive a response he was either completely unaware of what was going on or pretended to be.Mistakes were made throughout the build and at no point was Sunset willing to accept responsibility for them and consistently blamed others; the trades, the architect, the county, and us as the homeowner. We were then expected to cover the costs associated with their mistakes. From kitchen cabinets being painted the wrong colour and flooring being poorly to installed to the wrong garage doors being ordered and the basement flooding due to poor grading (an issue we pointed out months prior and were ignored) we were expected to cover the costs to fix what they did incorrectly. Our hope was that after taking possession we would be so happy with our new home that the nightmare of the build would fade. It did not. We have dealt with nonstop issues and there is still a list of issues pointed out prior to possession that have not been rectified; cracked and chipped masonry, damaged window casings, damaged sink, baseboards with water damage, gaps in tile around vents…At completion of our build (5 months after) we became aware they we had made a $30k overpayment which Sunset refused to release to us until we signed an all-encompassing document including a NDA. Pedro ignored our attempts to speak to him about this and it wasn’t until we went to their office in person that they finally released the money. My advice- don’t sign this document. We realize that Sunset will respond to this review with a carefully curated response deflecting any blame and full of platitudes in an attempt to placate us and appear empathetic and professional. If anything, this just reinforces our above comments that Sunset cannot accept any degree of responsibility for their actions. And while we cannot speak to the experiences of others, we can say that we have been contacted by MULTIPLE people who are or have built with Sunset- all with stories mirroring our own.I would encourage anyone looking to build a new home to look for another builder.
Excellent experience working with Sunset Homes to date. We interviewed six custom home builders prior to deciding to proceed with Sunset Homes. The Sunset team communicates well, responds to the home owner's requests in a timely manner and consistently demonstrates an organized, owner focused approach to executing the work. The Co-construct project management software used to manage the build is a great tool that allows the home owner to view and participate in all aspects of construction including schedule, budget, design and selections. Sunset utilizes high quality contractors who they have established relationships with over the years. As a result, the contractors are very responsive to owner requests and deliver a high level of quality in their daily work. The job site is organized and tidy at all times.
My wife and I rebuilt my childhood home with Sunset. We spent several years prior to working with Sunset pricing out renovations and new builds with different contractors. When we finally started working with Sunset we knew we had found the right builder for the job. Sunset was able to help with an initial cost estimate that outlined our budget and scope. Sunset worked closely with us during the design phase to provide construction input and help control costs and in some cases save money by making minor modifications (foundation design, window placement, etc) to our house plans. Throughout construction Sunset and our Project Manager (Nicole) went above and beyond to ensure we remained on schedule, costs were controlled and monitored and our expectations were met.During the construction and finishing of our project we did have a minor leak and a few quality issues with different trades. This was where Nicole and Sunset really stepped up and showed what the company stood for. Nicole clearly communicated the issues, listened to our concerns and worked with us to ensure a solution was found. When needed Nicole did not hesitate to push contractors to complete their scope(s), and make the required corrections. In the end our house looks great and we could not be more happy that we selected SunsetI would encourage anyone looking to build a custom home in Calgary to meet with Sunset and their team.
